Artist Statement:
I build leatherwork that recalls a vintage style of American craftsmanship — the merger of functional design with practical aesthetics. I look to create items that work and wear well, meeting the demands of daily use in any setting. Each item presents an honest, rough-hewn appearance that properly reflects its handmade origins.
My work features vegetable-tanned leather, which is known for its beauty and durability. Vegetable tanning, a process that uses natural materials instead of harsh chemicals, gives leather a supple feel and distinctive aroma. To accentuate each item, I’m careful to select hardware components — from rivets to buckles — that lend themselves to an authentic look. All dyes, glues and finishes are eco-friendly.
Inspired by the techniques of old-time artisans, I avoid machine work and prefer to craft each item using a small set of traditional hand tools. Thoughtful design and simple construction are priorities — as well as a close attention to special details like hand-stamping, saddle stitching and oil-rubbed finishes. These features contribute to original leatherwork that’s intended to garner attention and last a lifetime.
